The viewer and navigator are desktop software and will work with or without a license. The only thing you need a subscription for is to be able to share things using cadmium’s servers.
-
Any file or folder can be shared and downloaded.
For the viewer, it caters to bioinformatics file formats and supports pdbx, fasta, vcf among others (with more coming). If you try to open some other file the viewer will just assume it’s text and show you the text, although images will render just fine as images.
-
Yes, this is desktop software. The repository that is shown in the viewer is on the local filesystem, and the viewer works like Jupyter notebook. The use of a web browser is just a convenience and has to do with things like database searches and easy rendering.
Any modern browser such as Chrome, Brave or Safari will work.
-
Any file or folder that you want to share will go to a server, where it can be downloaded by another user. All files have a limited lifetime of 24 hours after which they’ll be deleted. Cadmium is not an archive solution.
Cadmium works well on gigabyte sized files, although it hasn’t been tested with something like 100 GB file. You can upload as much as you want but there’s roughly speaking a 10 GB soft cap by default. If you need more space then feel free to get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate you.
We DO NOT scrape any data, and we DO NOT engage in any training of any machine learning algorithms or “AI” or LLMs. We DO NOT sell or trade user data or files. See our privacy policy for more details, located at /terms.

Cadmium uses encryption in transit to keep your files safe. Files can only be downloaded by an authenticated user of cadmium, and unique randomised links are generated for each upload.
However we would still ask you to be cautious with sensitive information, and exercise some common sense, and consider stripping out things like personal details, or password protecting a file before you share it.
You own and retain all the rights to any data you upload. We DO NOT train AI on any user data, uploaded data, or meta data. We have no need for such data and no goals involving AI models. See our policy on /terms for details. -
Isn’t it awesome? My other options were red and blue instead of green and orange, but this is better.
